The Institute for Religion and Public Policies based in Washington asked EU officials to verify if the law observes human rights and basic EU standards.
The Institute submitted the petition after the Romanian Parliament had passed the new law on religious affairs, which, according to the Institute “severely infringes the internationally acknowledged instruments in the field of human rights and to which the Romanian Government must adhere”
"The law lays down a series of conditions that must be met by a religious group in order to obtain formal recognition. It must have at least 0.1% of the population as members, namely 23,000, in order to be recognized and it must wait for 12 years in order to achieve formal recognition. This makes Romania the country with the most restrictive system for religious groups registration in Europe”, a press release from the Institute states.
