General Data
The city of Aninoasa is located in the south of Hunedoara County in the coal
basin named Valea Jiului (Jiu Valley). Neigboring Aninoasa is the city of Petrosani
to the northeast, Gorj County to the south, and the city of Vulcan to the west.
Aninoasa is geographically positioned at 45°25 N and 23°22 E. The Jiu
Valley depression, where Aninoasa is located, stands at an elevation of 556
meters at the junction of the East and West Jiu Rivers, and 800 meters to the
east and west sides. Nearby Aninoasa are the Parang and Valcan Mountain ranges
that rise over 2000 meters high and are covered with forests of coniferous and
deciduous trees.
The Aninoasa Creek crosses through the town of Aninoasa,
most of which is built along the creek. The hydrographic network determined
the shape of the town. The most important river in this network for Aninoasa
is the West Jiu, which separates Aninoasa City into two geographic units: Aninoasa
and Iscroni. The unit of Iscroni is significantly smaller than that of Aninoasa
and covers the area from the bridge over the Jiu to the DN 66. Most of the inhabitants
are Romanian, but other ethnic groups are represented (e.g., Germans, Hungarians,
etc). The inhabitants' basic occupation is coal mining. The climate in Aninoasa
is the same as the mountain climate through Jiu Valley. In January the average
temperature ranges between -6° C and -3° C, and in August between 14
and 20° C.
