- Public library – community services provider -

The project is aimed at supporting the modernizing and redefining of public libraries’ role as community services providers and strategic institutions in securing the access to any kind of information. To this end, the project will support the establishment of the necessary framework for the relevant stakeholders to elaborate and debate an Action Plan to facilitate the process.

The target group of the project is represented by the local libraries in rural communities and small towns. These will receive support to redefine their roles as community services providers and strategic institutions in securing the access to any kind of information.

The following main activities will be conducted to meet the project objectives:

The establishment of the Working Group
The working group will bring together relevant stakeholders in the field of public libraries who will contribute to the development of an Action Plan for redefining the role to be played by public libraries in their respective communities, especially rural areas and small towns.

The webpage of the project
eRomania Gateway will develop a dedicated web page to serve as a virtual resource center for those interested in promoting the image of a modern library, able to meet the challenges of knowledge based society

The activity of the Working Group
The group members will collect data about the current situation of local libraries in the targeted communities and best practices from Romania and abroad. Based on this data, the group will define the structure and contents of the Action Plan, the steps to be undertaken to redefine the role of local libraries, and the recommendations for the decision-makers.

The seminar “Public library – community services provider”
The Action Plan drafted by the Working Group will be debated online on the project website and will it will also be presented within a one day seminar along with other relevant experiences from Romania and abroad. On the occasion, eRG and the members of the Working Group will collect feedback from the participants and will identify the support mechanisms to promote the document at the level of the Local Councils in charge with the management of local libraries.

Project expected results include:
- The Action Plan to promote the image of a modern library, able to meet the challenges of knowledge based society
- A Working Group bringing together relevant stakeholders in the field of knowledge based economy, to contribute to the elaboration and advertising of the Action Plan
- New services and facilities to validate the strategic role of public libraries within a functional, knowledge based society.
